Let’s
hold fast against our nature; for, if we give it an inch, it will
take a mile. And we can rest assured that the measure of our
progress
in the spiritual life must be taken from the progress we’re
making in
the virtue of mortification, which is particularly
necessary for those
who have to work for the salvation of souls; for
it’s useless for us to
preach penance to others, if we don't
practice it ourselves and if it
isn't obvious in our actions and
